One of the best parts of cycling is the races, and I’ve raced at least a few races every year since 2018. Since then, racing has been what’s motivated be to train as much as I do, and is really what gives me the drive to push through pain. This year I’ll be doing a mix of some short XCO-style mtb races, a longer MTB race or two, and a gravel race as well. These races are the ones I’m currently planning on; however, I may end up doing one or two other races on short notice.
Race #1: Mad Gravel (May 29th) & MGXC:
My first race of the year will be the Mad Gravel race hosted by Rattler Racing in Elbert CO. Last year I did the 78mi option, which didn’t go so well, due to a combination of getting the stomach flu a few days before, some bad nutrition choices, and a pacing strategy that really wasn’t pacing. This year I will be doing the shorter 43mi option, and will be gunning for an age group or maybe even overall podium. MGXC is a quick ~1hr MTB race at the same location as Mad Gravel. The race will be the day after MG. This one may or may not get pulled from my schedule for various reasons, but time will tell.
Race #2: Laramie Range Epic (July 30th):
My favorite course and favorite race by far! I’ll be doing the One & Done option or 1 lap of the ~32mi course. Last year I won the 0-29 age group and placed 3rd Overall. This year, this race is my top priority, so I will be going for 1st overall.
Race #3: Colorado State Championships (by Rattler Racing)(August 6th):
I’ll be coming back to this race for the third year in a row and will be seeking to do much better than in the past. Last year I squeaked into the top ten after a rough start were I collided with another rider and had to start from about 25 riders from the front. I ended up 10th, but knew I could’ve done better than that, so this year is about redemption.
Races #4, #5, #6, & #7.
These are the big question marks of the calendar. If the Colorado High School Cycling League decides to hold the high school races and run them without any Covid restrictions, then I will definitely be racing these races. As far as goals, I really have nothing to go off of, since I haven’t raced many of the people I will be competing against in over 2yrs. Hopefully I can pull off a good season as a senior and go out with a little bit of style.
These are some races I may or may not end up doing, depending on schedules and whether or not I participate in the high school league.
Elephant Rock Sunrise to Sunset MTB Race (June 4th):
If I do this, I’ll be doing solo. This will be a low priority race and I’ll mostly be going for a good workout, but of course I’ll compete if it comes down to it. 🙂
Dakota Five-O (September 4th):
If I don’t end up racing the high school league do to COVID restrictions then I will almost certainly be doing this race.
